On April 5, the 6th Annual Weakley County Schools Arts Festival reminded us of what’s possible when we support our students, encourage their creativity, and come together as a community.
Held at Gleason School, our community crowded the gym to experience the festival, which celebrates the top artwork from each school in our district. These pieces filled the displays, lined the tables, and invited guests to witness the artistic talents of our students. A common sentiment among the viewers was amazement at the level of talent these student artists possess. Some pieces clearly told a story. Some challenged the viewer. And some? Simply made you smile.
Student artists mingled with the crowds, easily recognizable by the aprons they received upon arrival, denoting them to be an award-winning artist at the festival. A look of delight crossed many of their faces as they saw guests’ joy in their work. For some of them, this was the first time they had ventured into sharing that work with the world. While artwork filled the displays, student musicians and vocalists filled the gym with sound, creating the perfect soundtrack to complete the day.
As awards were given out, artists were recognized with certificates and medallions for second and third place winners, with first place winners receiving cash prizes alongside their trophies for the first time ever, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and community partners. There’s something special about seeing a student’s face light up when someone recognizes the hours of dedication and passion they pour into their work. That spark, that moment of being seen and celebrated, was everywhere at this year’s festival.
Betsi Foster, Assistant Director of Schools, shared how pivotal these moments can be in a student’s journey.
“The arts offer students a space to explore and communicate ideas that words cannot always express,” said Foster. “This festival shows the incredible impact they can have in inspiring creativity, collaboration, and innovation. The talent on display today is a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication that both our students and their teachers put in every day.”
“It’s incredible to see the pride that our students possess in their work. It’s also just as powerful to see their families and our community show up for them,” shared Jeff Cupples, Director of Schools. “I am also proud of the caliber of talent our students display, and the county festival serves as a reminder of how important it is to provide an opportunity to showcase that talent. The arts empower our students by sparking creativity and are a key component of a well-rounded education.”
This festival wouldn’t be possible without the sponsors who believe in our students and support the Arts Festival. We extend our sincere thanks to Discovery Park of America, Edward Jones - Tony Robinson, Jennifer Hampton, AAMS, Todd Hampton, AAMS, City of Dresden, Dustin & Betsi Foster, Woodmen of the World #291, City of Greenfield, City of Martin, WK&T, Greenfield Banking Company, Howard D.
