When Jacob Abbott stepped in as Performing Arts Director at Dresden High School, he didn’t just build a program—he created a musical movement. His hard work, creativity, and passion have now earned him national recognition as one of Yamaha’s 40 Under 40 Educators of Music Education Excellence.

Before his arrival, students had little opportunity to engage with music beyond a general appreciation class. Now, Dresden High School boasts a concert band, choir, contemporary music ensemble (ROAR), and multiple general music classes, with the intention of growing the program to the competition level, giving students a broad range of musical experiences.

“Mr. Abbott has worked hard for many years to bring music to the lives of our students and community,” said Betsi Foster, Assistant Director of Schools. “For him to be recognized nationally just shows the caliber of music education our kids are getting and the dedication he brings to his profession.”

Abbott’s drive to expand the program stemmed from his own experiences growing up with access to both traditional band programs and informal garage bands with friends. Realizing the lack of music education opportunities for Dresden students, he committed himself to building a program that would allow students to have the same chance to explore music, no matter their skill level.

“Over the course of the school year, I build complete musicians,” Abbott explained. “These students learn basic rhythm through body percussion and bucket drumming, pitch through boom whackers, piano, ukulele and guitar, and finish the year with various ensemble configurations.”

His innovative approach has yielded not only a successful curriculum but also a surge of student engagement. The contemporary music class, ROAR, has become a highlight, performing at basketball games, local events, and even community fundraisers. Meanwhile, Abbott and Assistant Band Director Becca Steele have spearheaded efforts to bring back the school’s traditional band program, which now serves both middle and high school students.

“Mr. Abbott has brought a new energy to our school that goes beyond the music program,” said Scott Killebrew, Principal at Dresden High School. “His passion and creativity inspire not only his students, but our entire school community. We are incredibly lucky to have his talents in our school.”

“Music education helps students build confidence, discipline, and teamwork—skills that benefit them far beyond the classroom,” added Jeff Cupples, Director of Weakley County Schools. “Mr. Abbott’s efforts have brought these opportunities to our students, and this national recognition reflects the incredible impact he is making not only in our schools, but in our entire community.”

Now recognized as one of the nation’s top young music educators, Abbott remains focused on the future. Dresden’s music program is set to keep growing, ensuring that every student has the chance to experience the power of music.

Yamaha’s 40 Under 40 initiative highlights exceptional educators who demonstrate action, courage, creativity, and growth in music education. Abbott joins an elite group of educators who are reshaping the landscape of music programs across the country.

His recognition is not just an honor for him, but a testament to the students, school, and community that have embraced the vision of a thriving music program at Dresden High School.
