Special Education

The mission of the special education division of the Weakley County Schools is to enforce the belief that “all children can learn.” Our purpose is to provide each student with a disability in our school system with an individualized education program that is designed to provide appropriate educational/developmental services.

The Weakley County School System offers a wide variety of services to students with disabilities from age three through twenty-one. In accordance with state and federal laws, each student with a disability who is eligible for special education services is provided a free, appropriate, public education in the least restrictive environment.

Facts
Special education services are available in ALL schools.

Special education employs special education teachers; special education bus drivers; school nurses; speech therapist and speech teachers; and educational assistants.

Contractual arrangements are in place for physical therapy, occupational therapy, school psychology, and other related services.

NOTICE OF DESTRUCTION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS
Under federal law, special education records, which have been collected by the Weakley County School System relating to identification, evaluation, educational placement, and provision of special education services, must be retained for a minimum of three years after special education services to the student have ended. The Weakley County Special Education Department will destroy the special education records of all students whose special education services ended thirteen years prior to the beginning of each school year. Special education services end when the student is no longer eligible because he/she: graduates with a high school diploma; reaches twenty-two (22) years of age; or, no longer resides in Weakley County.

Prior to the destruction of their special education records, individuals 18 years of age and older or parents/guardians of dependent individuals have the right to review and/or obtain copies of these records. These records may be of use when applying for Social Security benefits, rehabilitation services, college, etc.

No response to this public notice will be viewed as consent to destroy the records.
